A LoRaWAN Field Gateway for Connected Livestock Operations
A connected pasture needs more than a tracking collar. Location and sensor records must travel from the field to a system that ranch staff can use.
The Milesight SG50 provides a gateway option for this communication layer. Jinshengchang supplies the gateway and supports its integration with compatible livestock tracking devices, field sensors and management software.
This product configuration focuses on building a practical pasture network around the ranch’s terrain, power resources and reporting requirements.
Plan the Network Around Animal Movement
Cattle do not remain at convenient radio test points. They move between feeding areas, water sources, tree cover and low ground.
Gateway planning should therefore begin with where animals spend time and which areas need dependable updates.
A reception test beside the farm office is insufficient for assessing the entire ranch. Use representative routes and stationary test locations to evaluate delivery under the intended operating conditions.
Choose a Site That Balances Radio, Power and Backhaul
A high installation point may improve some radio paths but have poor mobile reception. An accessible location may sit in shade for much of the day.
Review solar exposure, LoRaWAN reception and cellular connectivity together before final installation.
A suitable pole or wall position should also allow secure mounting and practical maintenance access. Solar-panel orientation and antenna placement should follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
Combine Livestock Tracking with Pasture Sensing
The same gateway infrastructure can serve several compatible device categories.
A project might combine livestock collars with water-level sensors, gate contacts and weather measurements. Each device still needs correct network registration and a suitable payload decoder.
Bringing these records into one application can help staff review animal movement alongside relevant field conditions.
Separate Gateway Capacity from Reporting Requirements
The number of registered devices is only one part of network planning.
Payload size, spreading factor, update interval, retransmissions and downlink demand influence how much traffic a deployment can support.
A herd requiring frequent position updates creates a different workload from environmental sensors reporting occasional measurements.
Start with the proposed traffic profile, select the server architecture and verify performance during a pilot before expanding.
Confirm Downlink and Command Behavior
Collar configuration changes and other remote commands depend on the end device’s LoRaWAN class, receive behavior and firmware.
A gateway does not make every battery-powered collar continuously reachable. Confirm when a device can receive a command and how the platform reports its acknowledgment.
For virtual-fencing projects, separately verify where boundaries are stored and how local decisions operate during a communication interruption.
Define Recovery Behavior Before Deployment
Temporary cellular interruptions and low-energy conditions should be included in commissioning tests.
Confirm which records are buffered, where they are stored and how recovery works with the selected firmware and server arrangement.
The application should preserve original event timestamps and clearly distinguish historical uploads from current observations.

Overview
Build a connected pasture network with the Milesight SG50, supplied and integrated by Jinshengchang. The gateway links compatible LoRaWAN livestock collars, ear tags and field sensors with a connected management system. Solar-assisted power, rechargeable battery storage and cellular backhaul make it suitable for locations where electrical cabling and fixed internet are difficult to install. Jinshengchang supports regional configuration, gateway commissioning and integration with the lora8 platform or a compatible customer system.
Compatible livestock collars collect their own position and status information, then transmit LoRaWAN messages according to their configured schedules. One or more SG50 gateways within radio reach can receive those transmissions. The selected network server processes the messages, while the application decodes the payload and displays the available information. Pasture sensors can share the same infrastructure when their frequency plans, network settings and application integration are compatible. Ranch staff use the platform to review the latest reported livestock positions, sensor readings and supported events. Gateway connectivity and battery information help the maintenance team identify infrastructure requiring attention. The gateway provides communication. Animal location calculation, activity analysis and boundary decisions belong to the relevant end device or application.
GPS positioning does not transmit a location by itself. Cellular, LoRaWAN or satellite connectivity must be selected for the operating environment.
What to evaluate
- Check local coverage, supported bands and reporting frequency before choosing a device.
- Confirm battery life under real conditions. Signal strength, reporting interval and temperature affect performance.
- Confirm mounting, fit, enclosure protection and maintenance with the final hardware specification.
- Confirm platform access, data ownership, integration protocol and recurring costs.
