GPS is not a connection: choosing the right network

A location fix is only the beginning. Understand how that position reaches your screen, from pasture to open water.

GPS is not a connection: choosing the right network
01

Overview

GPS positioning does not transmit a location by itself. Cellular, LoRaWAN or satellite connectivity must be selected for the operating environment.

GPS receives positioning signals. Sending that position to an app requires a separate connection, such as cellular, LoRaWAN or satellite, depending on the device.

02

Technical checklist

Check local coverage, supported bands and reporting frequency before choosing a device.

Confirm battery life under real conditions. Signal strength, reporting interval and temperature affect performance.

03

Fishing boats

For fishing boats, assess distance offshore, salt exposure, power supply and antenna placement. Match cellular or satellite service to the operating area; a tracker is not a substitute for required marine safety equipment.

Cellular service depends on local coverage. Offshore use may require satellite communication; GPS alone cannot send a location ashore.

04

Deployment

Pilot in the actual environment and verify alerts.

Confirm platform access, data ownership, integration protocol and recurring costs.
